The above answer given by is irrelevant ,as the word
'synchronizing motor' caught me on the wrong foot.Almost all
loads are inductive and hence the pf of the system is always
lagging. To negate lagging reactive load we have to include
capacitive reactive load using either shunt capacitors or
over excited synchronous motor.

Sinchronous motor is used to improve power factors.
Most of our equipments & electrical machinary are inductive
load i.e. in industries,institutions,large offices &
commercial buidlings are having large electrical system .
To improve the cosine angele between voltage & current we
are puting capacitor bank & Sychronous motor.
Sub-stations are having above power factor improvement
devices.

The synchroscope consists of two phase stator. The windings
are at right angles to one another and they are connected to
incoming generator. To have a rotating field ,the current in
one winding is made to lead the current in another by 90'
using a capacitor, as in a single phase motor. The polarising
winding in rotor (pointer) is connected to running generator.
