Role : Collection of Transaction Codes Only (No linked authorization Objects)
Profile : It contains the related Authorization Object, Fields and Values of the transaction codes.

Roles Contains set of t-codes and the profiles and profiles contains the authorization object that asigned to a user by using field,keys and values

Role is a set of function/activity which is assigned to him
based on his business role. Assigning a role to the user
does not mean that the user has access to execute those
functions.. this is ruled by profiles. Profile are required
to give necessary authorization to the users through the
respective roles.

Roles are collection of different transactions,reports/web links where its profile is nothing but set of authorizations which defines the behaviour of transactions listed in Role Menu. And another difference could be we can assign roles to user using PFCG but we can not assign manually created or generated profile directly to users using PFCG.
