steel,whethere in tension or compression area.kidly refer
is 456 page 42 for the formula.

it is defined as min legth required to transfer the load from on rod to another rod.

for compression = 46* dia of rod
for tension = 48* dia of rod
but in construction field = 50* dia of rod (both comp and tension )

if two differ size rod meet = lap length = 50* min dia of rod
