when short ckt happens a large amount of current flows,to
pass that large current to the ground ,the 3rd point known
as ground terminal makes bigger cross section.as resistance
in inversely proportion to the cross sectional area of
conductor.

during earth fault the fault current is large depending on rating of equipment.hence to transfer this current to earth without being melted down the earth pin is of larger cross-section. larger the ampere rating of plug or socket more is the cross section size of earth pin.

larger pin dia, means a greater surface, secured contact for grounding.
its bigger than the others so that safety first....means the appliance is ground first and then operated on 230V/
