A simple formula will help to co-orelate power factor, KW
load, and Kvar (i.e reactive power) required.
kvar = KW (Tan Qi - Tan Qd) where,
Qi = Cos inverse pfi = Initial power factor angle
Qd = Cos inverse pfd = Final power factor angle
After calculating Kvar we can select no of capacitors
required by looking at capacitor catalog.

Before doing mathematical manupulaion,as expaines very well
by our answer poster Dinesh.
Lets understand this simple fact that the power factor
changes due to the variation in Reactive power only.With
the help of power factor, one can easily calculate Reactive
power(Q=P*tan(arc cos pf)). The difference between reactive
power at two power factors is supplied by capacitor.

KVAR =KW(tanQ1 - tanQ2)
where
KW= load of installation
tanQ1 = current power factor
tanQ2= target power factor
in thisway we can calculate KVAR of capacitor that how much
KVAR have to be improved.

There is even no need to calculate. We have these charts which give the exact kvar required to be installed if we only know the load in KW and present pF and PF required.
