if dc supply is given to ac system than equipment like
transformer and motor(which works on induction principle)
burns. it is due to so much heat generated in windings as
flux does not vary in dc supply. while giving ac to dc
system there will be a increse in losses and material.

we can apply the ac system to DC by means of rectifier but
if we direct apply DC power to AC system winding of AC
system will burn.

we can give dc supply as ac by using an inveter and vice
versa was done by using rectifier.
