marshalling panels are used as interface between field
junction box & dcs control panel..
It also isolates the dcs panel from feild control panel..

Marshalling means grouping of I/Os. Marshalling panel is
placed between the DCS system panel and field instruments.
In marshalling panel grouping of I/Os like Analog Input,
Analog Output, Digital Input, Digital Output and Pulse I/O
are done. From marshalling panel the I/O signals are
communicated to the system CPU/Controllers through
Isolation/Signal conditioners.
In marshalling panel we can easily identify the Input or
Output and easy diagnosis can be done in case of fault
finding.

There is a more practical reason for using a Marshalling Panel which becomes apparent if we imagine a multi-cable coming from the field and being connected directly to the I/O cards of a DCS. Whenever some kind of maintenance/test/check has to be performed just imagine the risk of interfering directly at an I/O card just to open some loop circuit. There would be the risk of touching another entry , loosing some bolt, and many other situations that could jeopardize the whole I/O card for some lack of other space specifically created to allow the proper access for maintenance and testing - the Marshalling Panel. Once the connections between all the I/O cards and a Marshalling Panel are done, tested and identified, no one wil have to deal with the I/O panel again, which means less risk and a proper place to do maintenance and testing, for there will be proper open/close connectors, fuses, isolators and all that the Project specifies.
