There are more than 1200 caves in Maharashtra. Most of them are Buddhist. The cave excavation started from 200 BC and ended till 800 AD. All the caves were carved by Buddhist Sangh. There are inscription in caves which give information about donations, which include right from commoner , tradesmen, monks themselves to the kings, Satavahanas, etc. The caves are in the Deccan trap, The sahyadri s which has the rock Besalt, which is very hard and difficult to cut. It is a marvel that at that time, with limited equipments, they could excavate the caves, may be 20-30 years for each cave. some of the caves are very large. the largest monastery at Ajanta measuring (35.08 X 27.65 m) which is Cave 4. The operation of cave excavation can have a large length of time which can be during all the periods mentioned......

I feel the Buddhist Sangh at Ajanta was responsible for
building Ajanta and this continued before the Christ, till
later than ninth century. It is not correct to subscribe
particular years for the making of the caves.Historians
have no idea about the working of Buddhist Sangha at
Ajanta, though one gets information from the
inscriptions, but regarding years it is doubtful.
