it depends upon the passengers weight. for heavy vehicles
rear wheel drive is choosed for better stability. In case
of passenger cars etc., front wheel drive is preferred for
high speed and where stability is basically good.

basically, if torque produced by the engine is transmitted to front wheel then its a front wheel drive and if to rear set of wheel then its a rear wheel drive...its is decided on the usage of vehicle.. for hard rocky terrains it is usually rear wheel drive or four wheel drive...in 4 wheel drive power is transmitted to all four wheels of the vehicle.
