basically, if torque produced by the engine is transmitted to front wheel then its a front wheel drive and if to rear set of wheel then its a rear wheel drive...its is decided on the usage of vehicle.. for hard rocky terrains it is usually rear wheel drive or four wheel drive...in 4 wheel drive power is transmitted to all four wheels of the vehicle.
