generator is a machine which converts mechanical energy
into electrical energy(AC or DC),where as an alternator
converts mechanical energy into electrical energy (AC only).

Generator is the common term which can be a AC/DC Gen.

Though term "Generator" can be used any type of generation
whether it is AC or DC but it is generally referred for DC
generator because in previousely generation was only in DC
but when AC become normal source of electrical supply than
Alternator came in picture and Alternator only generate in
AC. But term "Generator" can be used for both type of
generator.

in generators...
thr is no commutator..
output is taken directly from the conductors..so the output
is DC..
in alternator the commutator is used
so the output is AC

in generators we collect output from the rotor but in the
alternator gollect output from stator bcoz output of
alternor is very high than generator to avoid sparking from
brushes the output is connected to stator
