why is 555 timer called so?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
inside the 555 timer, there are 3 resistors used in series to get vcc/3 and 2*vcc/3 ....
all the 3 resistors used are same and are 5k ohm resistors..
so its called 555 timer..
acknowledgement guys ... am kinda sure though, but plz verify it ...

as i thought 555 timer is called so because of the fact that it consist three 5Kohm resistor in series and with the help of these resistors there is a delay of time and also other fact which make it timer is that timing of the pulses can be controlled through this.It basically works as a clock timer.............................
I hope its the perfect answer..............

IC 555 is named as timer, it is one of the most useful ic
in electronic circuit. It consist of 3 resisters having the
capacity of 5kohm each, and with the help of these
resisters it can create a time delay, so it is called timer.

The 555 timer is an integrated circuit (chip) implementing
a variety of timer and multivibrator applications. The 555
gets its name from the three 5-KΩ resistors used in typical
early implementations.

Answer / syncopator
The 555 produces pulses. These may be a single pulse, in
monostable mode, or a series of pulses in astable mode.
The duration of the pulses, and the interval between them
in astable mode, can be controlled as desired.
In other words, the timing of the pulses can be
controlled.
