and why?

Answer / srikrishna
zener diode is used as a voltage regulatory device..
because..
the voltage across the zener diode in reverse bias is
constant after reaching certain value i.e. breakdown
voltage.
normal diodes distorts at htis breakdown voltage but the
zener still runs after this voltage and keeps the voltage
across the diode constant even the supply voltage increses..

Zener diode is used as a voltage regulator because it is
specially designed, heavily doped Si or Ge diode. We cannot
use "Normal semicondutor diodes" as voltage regulator
because they only conducts in forward bias region and acts
as open circuit (nearly) in reverse bias condition.
Since Zener is heavily doped,so its
depletion layer width is also very thin in reverse bias
condition as compared to normal diodes.

a zener diode can be used as a voltage regulator to provide
a constant voltage from a source whose voltage may vary
over sufficeient range. The zener diode of zener voltage Vz
is reverse connected across the load Rl across which
constant output is desired. The series resistance R absorbs
the output voltage fluctuations so as to maintain constant
voltage across the load .It maintain resistance longly.
