what is the difference between drift current and diffusion
current.

Answer / sanchit choubey
the drift current is that current which is due to the applied electric field and diffusion is one which is due to the minority charge carriers.
But this statement is not valid if we consider the case of the cambridge university...Following link shows a much better explaination...

Drift Current
Due to thermal generation electron-hole moves but cannot
constitute of any current.when the voltage is applied
across the P-N Junction electron as well as hole motions
occurs, due to this current flows through the P-N
Junction, this current is called as drift current
Diffusion Current
If doping is non uniform, charge carriers in high
concentration area moves to low concentration area to
achive uniform concentration, this process is called
difussion process.Due to diffusion process the electrons
moves from n side to p side and holes moves fron p side to
n side, due to this movement current flows through the P-N
junction, this current is called as diffusion current.

Drift current is due to the applied potential difference
across the semiconductor, by appling this electric field is
establish and free electrons move in specific direction
that current is called drift current and the velocity gain
by free electron is drift velocity.
Diffusion Current is due to the diffusion of charge
carriers (i-e electrons, holes, ions)it is indedendent of
applied electric field, charge carriers flow from high
concentration to low concentration,it`s direction is either
same to drift current or opposite to drift current.

Answer / engr. haider khalil
Drift current is smaller than diffusion current
WHY ????
Because ;
Diffusion Current carries due to MAJORITY CARRIER Flow
&
Drift current Arises due to MINORITY charge Carrier Flo

Drift Current: is the carrier drift due to external electric
field. is proportional to total carriers.
Diffusion Current: is due to charge concentration gradient
due to different phenomenons(light/temperature/electric
field) which generate the hole-electron pair in the bulk of
the doped silicon (either n or p). (Diffusion current is not
restricted to diode with two different junctions)

Answer / meenakshi nautiyal
drift means charged particle in motion in response to an
applied electric field.when an electric field is applied
accross the semiconductorthe carriers start moving,it is
known as drift current.
diffusion current is due to the concentration difference
between holes and e- of p and n type semiconductors.

When the flow of carriers is due to an applied voltage the resultant current is called a DRIFT CURRENT .
A second type of current may also exist in a semiconductor .
This current is called DIFFUSION CURRENT,and it flows as a result of a gradient of carrier concentration . A gradient of carrier concentration arises near the boundary of a P-N junction .
The DIFFUSION CURRENT is also be due to the motion of both holes & electrons
