Answer / rajesh
Diode is the uncontrolled rectifier and Zener diode is a
controlled rectifier.Diode has practically no limits of
voltage range to work in, whereas zener diode works only in
a voltage range(e.g. -4V to +4V).So,Zener diode is known
as voltage regulator

A regular diode will let current go in only one direction
(forward bias) which is the direction of the arrow that you
would see on electronic schematics (the only line that you
would see PHYSICALLY on a diode = Arrow on electrical
schematic). If current is applied in the opposite direction
(reverse bias) then you would not have current on the other
end unless the voltage that you apply to it surpasses its
Breakdown Voltage then you would have a reading since the
REGULAR diode would be burn out.
Zener diodes would act the same way as a regular diode
except that in reverse bias it would allowed current to pass
when the voltage surpasses its Breakdown Voltage (Zener
Voltage).

Diode is act only as a rectifier action not regultes the
voltage.
But, Zener diode acting as a Rectifier as wellas stabilizes
the Voltage .

AT FIRST WE HAVE TO KNOW WHAT IS A DIODE?SIMPLE.. CONSISTS OF TWO TYPE OF SEMICONDUCTOR 1)n-TYPE &2)P-TYPE COMBINED TOGETHER.NOW FOR A ORDINARY DIODE THE DOPING LEVEL IS LOWER THAN THAT OF ZENER DIODE. AS A RESULT AT THE REVERSE BIAS CONDITION AFTER APPLYING A CERTAIN VOLTAGE THE DIODE COMES TO THE BREAKDOWN REGION AND BLOWS UP .BUT FOR A ZENER DIODE IS ACTUALLY WORKS IN THIS BREAKDOWN REGION(AS IT IS DESIG TO DO SO!!!) AS A RESULT IT RUNS EVEN AFTER APPLYING HIGH REVERSE BIAS VOLTAGE.
ANOTHER POINT THAT IT IS ACT LIKE A VOLTAGE REGULATOR.AND THE O-DIODE IS ACT AS A RECTIFIER.ALLTHE BEST.:-)

A normal diode is work in one direction forward bias, and opposes the reverse direction. But in Zener diode work both forward and reverse. In forward bias work normal diode and also work reverse zener voltage.zener use for voltage regulator and normal diode use for rectifier.bye only aon

Answer / teo
diodes will become destroyed if forced to conduct current in
the wrong direction, but zener diodes are optimized to
operate when placed backwards in a circuit.

zener operation is same as that of the ordinary pn junction
under the forward bias condition.Where as under reverse
biased condition break down of the junction occurs. If it
is heavily doped, depletion layer will be thin and
breakdown occurs at a very low reverse voltage.
