What are methods to avoid the inrush current at the time of
starting of power transformer ?
Answers were Sorted based on User's Feedback
We cannot avoid inrush current when any transformer is
switched on after a long period of shutdown. Only thing we
can do is minimising it by charging the transformer by the
lowest voltage (using tapp changers)and we can avoid
spurious tripping by inrush current by using only
transformer differential relays in which an inrush current
filter is used.

BRFORE STARTING ON THE TRANSFORMER WE SHOULD SWITH OFF ALL
THE OUTGOING FEEDER FROM THE DISTRIBUTED PANEL BOARD,THEN
ON THE TRANSFORMER WITHOUT CONNECTING ANY LOAD, THEN SWITH
ON THE FEEDER ONE BY ONE,R CONNECTED LOAD.THIS THE METHOD
TO AVOID THE INRUSH CURRENT FROM THE TRANSFORMER...

You can reduce the second harmonic by using the DELTA
connection in the CT’s but I prefer to play with the
protection relay parameters, in this case it is better to
control the differential current, there is 2 slopes for the
differential zones, try to increase the slope N01 to get
passing the inrush current.
By filtering the 2 nd harmonics, refer to relay co
ordination and set the values

TO AVOID INRUSH CURRENT IN TRANSFORMER WE MUST USE A
VOLTAGE SENSE RELAY TO MONITOR THE VOLTAGE PEAK , SO WHEN
ITS VOLTAGE PEAK THE C.B CAN BE CLOSED AND INRUSH CURRENT
WILL BE LIMITED
