why do we generate sinusoidal ac?can we generate some other
waveforms by alternators?

Answer / d.k.mathur
It is by virtue of rotation of alternator through 360
degree and Fleming's Left hand rule that we get Sine wave.
We cannot generate other wave forms by Alternators. For
other form of Wave Inverters can be used.

alternator is designed to rotate through an angle of
360degrees during operation one of the phase will be
reaching max and other will be in zero position so by this
the wave form will be pulsating and the first wave generated
will be ac in every machine so we cannot produce other
waveforms....to produce other wave forms u can go for invertors

If we follow the shape of sinusoidal wave, then we can see
every times voltage is changing i.e. voltage is induced
when rate of change of flux is occured.
If it may rectangle , the some times it is required to make
costant flux. But for producing voltage constant flux is
not possible.
So it is impossible to make the shape.

In case of Alternator, It rotates from 0 degrees to 180
degrees and then from 180 degrees to 360 degrees. In doing
so it cuts the flux lines do to which an emf is produced in
an alternating manner.

If You place Square shape Alternator, the wave become Square.
If circle produce sin wave.
If triangle it produce triangular wave.

ALTERNATOR CAN ONLY GENERATE SINE WAVE THAT IS..0 TO 180
THEN 180 TO 360 DEGREES. DERIVE FROM THE ROOT WORD
ALTERNATOR MEANS IT VARIES FROM POSITIVE TO NEGATIVE WAVE
OR VICE VERSA..IT MIGHT PRODUCE RIPPLE DURING WHICH STATICS
OR HARMONICS BUT IT ALWAYS HAVE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE WAVE.

Answer / elango k
in ac only copper and iron losses are less,
interference with communication lines is less,
overall efficency is more,so we generate sine wave other
than triangular ,rectangular ,square wave.

Ques:how you generate sinusoidal emf in a synchronous M/C?
Ans:it is from the rotating poles or say rotating mmf which is sinusoidal due to the constant air gap b/w stator and rotor poles. so can you change this air gap periodically, the answer from my side is not possible. Hence one may produce only sinusoidal emf

Answer / ashwathy
i think we can produce other wave forms also.it depends on
the shape of the pole, in a salient pole motor we get a
sine wave due to its shape,we may also get a flat topped
wave.
