what is the purpose of item master organisations?
can we define more than one item master?

Answer / vamshi
An item master is a master record of inventory items. The
item master includes the item code and description and
other mandatory attributes to uniquely identify the item;
it may also include materials and handling specifications,
sales and fulfillment specifications etc.
An item in the master can exist without any corresponding
inventory item in stock, but an inventory item cannot exist
without that in the item master!
Accurate, comprehensive item master data is the critical
foundation for many essential business processes. In most
companies, item master data is entered and maintained in
one or more ERP, procurement, maintenance, PLM, inventory
and other legacy systems. Consistency and synchronization
between the various instances of the data are typically
nonexistent as each system, location and user group uses
different data standards, naming conventions, and
classification taxonomies. The problem grows exponentially
over time as underlying systems and users change and
evolve. Duplicate entries, incomplete records and out of
date information may become commonplace.
Item Master is useful in:
Inventory reduction
Spend management
Strategic sourcing
Systems consolidation
Acquisition and integration
Compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley
Reporting and business intelligence
ERP upgrade and migration

Item Master organization is the organation where items will
be defined by default and then only it is possible to
assign that item to child organizations.
Item maser org contains all master list of items defined in
the system irrespective of whether you want to assign to
one inv org or multiple inv orgs.
Item master orgnization is vertual organitions where no
transaction will be carried out.Used only to define items.
Yes it is possible to have multiple IMOs but not
recommended.It may lead to confusions.

IMO is a logical organization which serves as a central
repository of items, primarily aimed at ease of maintaining
your child organization(s) items. You can set certain
important item attributes called master org controls, which
will by default be set for the child org(s).

Item Master Organization is the Master Inventory Org where
the determination of the Item and its Attributes is done
ex. whether it is purchasable ,stockable etc.It is like the
Central Office of the Inventory Dept where any item before
being taken/defined in Inventory the various
characteristics of it are determined. Only decisions are
made about the Item and no inventory transactions are
possible through this Master Inventory Org.
We cannot take more than One Master Inventory Org (MIO) for
a Business Group.
