Oxidation:- It is a process which involves addition of
oxygen if any other electro- negative radical or any process
involving removal of hydrogen or any other electropositive
radical.
Loss of electrons occur during oxidation:-When any element
combines with oxygen it loses electrons which are
transferred to oxygen. So we can say that oxidation is any
reaction in which an atom or ion loses electrons. So
oxidation can be known as in other term De-electronation.
In term of valency we can define the oxidation as a process
valency
Oxidising Agents:-The substances which are capable of giving
oxygen to other substance or contain an atom or group of
atoms which readily join electrons are called oxidizing agent.
Reduction:-The process which involves removal of oxygen or
any other electro-negative radical or any process involving
addition of hydrogen or any other electro-positive radical
During reduction elements again electrons. So reduction is
defined as reaction in which an atom or ion gains electrons.
So it is also known as Electonation
In term of valency charge reduction is known as a reaction
involving a decrease in positive valency or increase
negative valency.
Reducing Agent:-A substance which brings about reduction by
supplying electrons is called a reducing agent.
Oxidation reducing reactions proceeds side by side. If one
atom losses electron, there must be another which gains the
electrons and is reduced. Oxidation can never take place
without reduction
The reaction in which oxidation and reduction takes place
simultaneously are called as Oxidation Reduction or Redox

Answer / ramesh kumar.m.b.b.s.
when any substance adds to oxygen then oxidation takes
place. eg- s+o2 -- so2.
The process which involves removal of oxygen from oxygen
atoms are called reduction.eg- h20 -- h+ o2
so2 -- s+o2.
