Why Lighting transformers are used? what will be the current if lightings connected through direct..

To avoid Voltage Fluctuations from main line we connect to
lighting transformer to have constant voltage for lighting..
if we connect directly light fittings may damage or it may
take long time for hid lamps to on.while it was off due to
voltage dip.
