The slip ring or wound rotor motor is an induction machine
where the rotor comprises a set of coils that are terminated
in slip rings to which external impedances can be connected.
The stator is the same as is used with a standard squirrel
cage motor.
The slip ring motor is used primarily to start a high
inertia load or a load that requires a very high starting
torque across the full speed range. By correctly selecting
the resistors used in the secondary resistance or slip ring
starter, the motor is able to produce maximum torque at a
relatively low current from zero speed to full speed. A
secondary use of the slip ring motor, is to provide a means
of speed control. Because the torque curve of the motor is
effectivley modified by the resistance connected to the
rotor circuit, the speed of the motor can be altered.
Increasing the value of resistance on the rotor circuit will
move the speed of maximum torque down. If the resistance
connected to the rotor is increased beyond the point where
the maximum torque occurs at zero speed, the torque will be
further reduced.
NOTE:
The all above said characteristic of slip ring motor is due
to slip ring as well as due to external resistance. All
characteristic are related to is starting period or for
speed control. when we disconnected the resistance from the
circuit then slip ring motor and induction motor will be
same. So, hope the reason, "why slipring motor , at full
speed run as squirrel cage motor" will be cleared.

We have a couple of oil tanks at our plant. One of them does not have a lightning arrester installed. My question is it necessary to install an arrestor on every tank or will this particular one be covered by the arrestor installed on the ajdacent tank, Since all the tanks are close to each other. Basically, I want to know that if these arrestors or protection works in a parituclar area of effect or influence. Thanks

Ceiling fan motor wiring Hi, I have 2 ceiling fans broken. The receiver/control units burned out due to lightening. One Harbor Breeze and one Hunter's I took them apart (remove receiver units). Now on both of the motor I see 4 wires coming out from each motor I really want to know the function of each wire. Are there anyway I can test to see which is which? After searching forums I know these 4 wires are from 2 sets of coils inside the motor, one is Start winding and the other is Runing winding I could not find the receiver/control unit any where, so I am planing to buy Capacitors and universal remote controls to make the fans run again. Anyone has any idea how to do the wiring, please help Thnks

We have 2 Nos. Transformer with the capacity of 2000KVA and 1250 KVA and currently using only one 2000KVA T/R during operational hours while non- operational hous 1250 KVA T/R also used to reduce T & D losses. Similarly, 2 capacitor bank of 500KVAR and 300 KVAR also installed to balance reactive power. Now problem is around 1000 KW load PF is not maintaning 0.99 as 350 KVAR capacitor is in healty condtion. Now the PF is maintain 0.95 to 0.96.
