In Hplc the principle is adsorption it is applicable for
separation of non volatile solutions.
where as in Gc the principle is partition it is applicable
for separation of volatile compounds.

In hplc sample is partitioned between 2 phases and it is applicable for non volatile compounds whereas in cg adsorption phenomenon is taking place and mainly useful for volatile compounds.
