The main purpose of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is to
control the excitation to limit the terminal voltage of
synchronous generator at reference level. The excitation
system of a Turbo generator contains the exciter and the
AVR. AVR acts upon DC Vf that supply excitation to the
synchronous generator.

The synchronous generators used do not naturally operate at
any particular voltage but the voltage can be adjusted by
manually setting the excitation. However as soon as any
load is put on the generator a different value of
excitation is required. The AVR automatically makes the
necessary adjustment by closed loop control to keep the
generator voltage constant. The operator can manually
adjust the AVR reference to allow connection to a power
system. Once connected to a large power system the AVR
setting determines the reactive power load kVAR on the
generator. A high setting exports kVAR (lagging power
factor) and a low setting imports kVAR (leading power
factor).

AVR is used to maintain the generator voltage the exciter system w.k.t the exciter give excitation to generator field wdg the the output of AVR is fed to exciter and exciter output voltage is converted to DC through RDFR and it feeds the DC volt to generator field WDG
