there can be many ways in this question can be answered :
1. Check out a petrol pump or a gas filling station for a car in a particular area say a district or state and divide it area of that particular state or district to get number of cars per unit area, when you get this number ...try getting no of cars for bigger states and finally average them and multiply by area of US.
2. Satellite can be used to do it .
3. No. of cars on a road in a fixed amount of time for say a week or so.

The population of U.S May be approximately 300millions or 30 crores!!
There wil be atleast 3 people for a household or so called family(so people don't have familys + orphans gets almost compensated wid people having more than one child)!!
So assuming 70% of households having 1.5cars each there wil be [(70/100)*10cr=70cr*1.5=105cr] i.e...totally 105crore cars r der in U.S!!

I agree with Chakao. The way to solve this question could
be like this :-
1- Find the number of car show rooms in each and every city
of the USA.
2- Then check their Databases.
3- Calculate the number of sales done by each of them (For USA).
4- Sum them up, you will get the result.
Optimality of this problem depends upon the amount of
relevant information you gathered.
Any comments???
