we can get only residual voltage across the terminals(due
to residual magnetism).dc series generator cannot build-up
it's voltage without the load.
ONE INTERESTING FACT IS,

DC SERIES MOTOR SHOULD NOT BE STARTED WITHOUT LOAD WHEREAS
DC SERIES GENERATOR CANNOT BE STARTED WITHOUT LOAD.
