A single phase fan has two windings but unless there is a
phase difference between the two winding current there
cannot be a rotating flux and there fore wthe fan will not

fans used in our household... are singl phas inductn motor
which needs a revovng flux to b produced ... this revovlvng
flux is producd by splitting phase of single phas supply
into two... as capacitor has leadng power factr.
one can use inductr for splitting phase...
but practically never done... bcoz of its lagging pf
nd lagging pf wilhav severe effect on efficiency of fan

As the fan is single ph. It is
not self started. So it is used
for starting & running
purpose.
