raid is knothing but a redundent array of inexpensive
disks this can be used in solaris for redundency of data
and availability mostly used raid configuration are
raid0,raid1 and raid5 where as volume manager used for same
thing above mentioned but we can increase the slice size in
online and also decrese the slice also.

Raid stands for Redundent Array of inexpensive Disk OR Redundent Array of Independent Disk. It is having different levels i.e., Raid0, Raid1, Raid 0+1, Raid 1+0, Raid 5. We have increase the span of file system across the Hard Disk and Protect the data of file system. But with in the Hard Disk only 7 Slices only.In Raid Levels Raid 1+0 is not support to the SVM.
In Volume Manager have Raid & LVM (Logical Volume Manager). Raid is growths the file system but in LVM there is no limit for 7 Slices , here creating N number of slices as for the file size.

In solaris, using RAID you can create maximum of 8 slices,
Volume manager helps you to create as many partitions as you
want using soft partitions.

Dear Fried,
If we see aerial way we can not identify any difference
inbetween RAID and Volume Manager. Whereas we see ground
level it seems difference. We can see those things below:-
RAID: It is an aronym for Redundant Array of Inexpensive
(or Independent) Disks. There are 6 RAID levels are
existing, which are 0-5. In solaris we are using raid-0,
raid-1, raid-5. Very few storage environemnts support RAID
levels 2,3 and 4.
VOLUME MANAGER: Which you control the devices to store the
data in expected disk. We can get back those data without
loss. For that we are using various storage methods is
called RAID LEVEL.

Hi I wanted to know what command can I use to perform a rescan in Solaris10 u4/u5 64 bit machine. I know once the disks are added we can perform a rescan using the following commands drvconfig-->disks--> cfgadm OR devfsadm But they will detect the disks and once the disks are remove the entries are still shown unless the disks are removed. So is there another command or a script that could help me find that disks were removed from my solaris machine.
Hello Everyone, One of our servers is showing a strange issue, let me paste the output Code: root # uptime 4:37pm 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.04, 0.04 Its been running since months but you can see after time there isn't any output like up 191 days(s). Even the who command with b and r option isn't giving any output. Code: root # who -b root # root # who -r root # the date command displays correct output. I am not sure but is it because someone has played with utmpx and wtmpx files, is reboot the only solution we have. Can anyone help us since we don't intend to reboot the server for such a reason and also no one has complained till yet.
