in a client-server application
some systems(nodes) are connected to the server
in each node contains application layer
in server contains business layer and database layer

now Desktop(client or node) testing means.. testing presentation layer or GUI
now client-server means.. testing both client and server(presentation layer,business layer and database layer)

Why did u choose testing why not developing.
