ELCB stands for earth leakage CB.It trips any faulty circuit
by detecting the current flowing through the neutral.Under
normal condition, the intensity of current flowing through
the neutral must be the same as the current flowing through
phase to load then to neutral. If the intensity is not the
same then it means that the return current is deviating from
its actual path ie flowing through equipment body or if the
current is not returned properly. Now consider a case where
the return current is flowing through a operating persons
body(electrocution) after coming out from the load.
In this case, ELCB will not work because the return current
intensity flowing through the persons body is same. These
were the draw backs in older type of ELCB.
To over come this draw back RCD ie Residual Current
Detectors are used along with the ELCB which detects the
residual current deviation ie in case of any electrocution
also and then trips the Circuit.
To detect any

why we use ac supply as 415 volts instead of 415 v why we cant apply 230 v for dc
