Answer / sjtbehera
When a force applied to a object it will try to compress
the structure. so structure will bend. so a bending
moments " bend" an object but it is more like a twisting
motion on the long side of the object. This bending moment
is main factor decide reinforcement of structure.

the points where bending moments are maximum are points of
maximum stress , therfore these points require more
reinforcement with steel to counter the stresses . Whereas
at points where stresses are less , curtailment of steel
can be done .

Bending moment is nothing but the internal stress developed
in structural element when external forces or moments are
applied on structural element which tend to bend.........to
avoid the bending of member reinforcement is used.........

A Load is applied on a certain area, then on that area thier
will be chance of some bending,to avoid that bending
reinforcement will be provided at the bottom to take
tension & at top compression.
Even though top bar will take compression, concrete will
also take the compression load.
