Why we use vestigial side band (VSB-C3F) transmission for
picture?

Answer / niharika
bandwidth of signals used for picture reception is very
large,so standard AM cannot be used.if ssb were used,it
would result in half the bandwidth and ssb receivers being
complex, they are not used.so vestigial transmission is used
in which a vestige or trace of the unwanted sideband is
transmitted along with the wanted sideband and carrier.

In a TV receiver, phase response of the filter near the flat
passband would have harmful effect on the received TV
signal, a portion af unwanted sideband must also be
transmitted,as it acts like a guard band.

As our ear is not sensitive to phase distortion..so ssb can be used for to transmit the speech signal..but for picture phase distortion is more noisy so it cannot be used ...thats why vsb is used ..

VSB transmission reduces bandwidth of the transmitted
signal. Since it is very difficult to separate carrier at
the receiver (video frequency range - 0 to 5MHz), distortion
may occur to low frequency components in the spectrum.
Because of this, a portion of LSB is also transmitted.

in ssb transmission some information is lost also it is
some what complex,so vsb is used for television signal
transmission as it has two signal one is audio signal and
another is video thus one side band ,carrier, and some
portion of another side band is transmitted,so complete
information is transmitted without any losses.also bandwith
and power can be saved using vsb.

If we use the SSB technique and transmit picture
signal, then some portion of the other side band is also
transmitted. This is due to the transition band of the
actual filter which is quite large. If the cut off freq is
1000Hz with a transition band of 2.5% , then 1250Hz is
passes through that band. This is utilized in transmission
of picture signals.
