basically reactive power consumption is depend upon the
load pf.. as Q=kw*sin@ ...n so make an arrangement such
that capacitor is connected across the secondary while load
is on n get separated at low load ..or no load

add a power factor correcting capacitor to all the loads you are using.. now most of the loads are provided with such an arrangement. hence you can minimize the reactive power consumption
