I need to compare the energy consumption of an industrial
machine before and after improving. Shall I compare the
apparent power or the active power? I know usually
factories use compensated capacitors (or other similar
components) to compensate the reactive power, so if I use
the apparent power, it's not the real power consumed.

Answer / ullas
by connecting a capacitor bank to any inductive load meets
the reactive power demand. since the KVAR portion changes
the KVA portion also changes and KW portion remains i its
original position. since the factories are charged by the
electricity suppliers by considering in to their power
factor. whe we are having a low powerfactor, then reactive
demand is higher. so to meet this capacitors are used to
meet the reactive demand.
