The inlet pressure of a pump when above atmospheric
pressure is suction head.
The inlet pressure of a pump when below atmospheric
pressure is Suction Lift

However.... Please note the following defintions clearly..
Suction head is the difference b/w the waterlevel in the
tank and the centre of the impeller of the pump...
1) Either the tank can be located at lower elevation or at
higher elevetion than the level of the impeller...
If it's lower, then the suction is done by lift... So it's
called SUCTION lift.
In the case of suction lift... The head difference b/w the
last point of footvalve (under the suction pipe) & centre
of impeller is taken as the suction lift....

where liquid level is below the center line of pump it is called suction lift. it means the pump is lifting the liquid.
where liquid level is above the center line of the pump, it is called suction head.

suction head is the vertical distance b/w sump and the
centre of impeller whereas suction lift is the distance b/w
centre of impeller and head against which the pump has to
deliver the liquid
