In what context? as far as i can see, application based is
the reports we create in impromptu and web based are the
reports(IWR) we publish at upfront.

Application based are the reports that we create using
impromptu.
And Web based are the reports created using cognos 8.x versions.

In application based, to create a report you will need a
tool installed in your local machine. eg: impromptu is a
tool using which you will create the imr(impromptu reports)
in cognos 7.x. Same is the case with Powerplay 7.x or 8.x
you need the software to be installed to create the
cubes/models.

Whereas in web based, you access the tool that is installed
in the server over the intranet. These software doesnt need
anything to be installed on your system to create a report.
eg: Report studio, query studio, analysis studio etc..

This is referred to as zero foot print technology by cognos.

FYI: Not all the tools in cognos 8.x are web based. For eg
cognos administration is an application based tool. Unless
you have it installed on your system you cannot access it.

I have Date,product,Quantity_Sold columns and I want Product, MTD(month Till date),YTD(Year Till Date) as output. Can anyone help me with the logic in getting MTD i.e quantity sold from 1st of this month to till date (i.e. 01- 11-2013 to 26-11-2013) and YTD i.e QTD sold from 1st date of the year to till date(i.e. 01-01-2013 to 26-11-2013). Hi, I have Cognos 7.0 Impromptu reports and these reports have been created with the Mainframe datasource. Now the business needs these reports should be upgraded but with Oracle datasource. So what's the idea, first we should migrate these reports into ReportNet? then in that case what we will do with the Impromptu Catalog? Second, suppose we need to migrate these reports into Cognos 8 (may be 8.4) then how we will do that? do we need to create a FM Model for these reports. Please advice!
