Synchronous motors is called so because the speed of the rotor of this motor is same as the rotating magnetic field. It is basically a fixed speed motor because it has only one speed, which is synchronous speed and therefore no intermediate speed is there or in other words it’s in synchronism with the supply frequency.

Syn motor - In Syn motors we have to give supply for both stator and rotor. And may rotor have permenant magnetic pole. So magnetic flux will produced in both. Then flux opposition will happen which results rotor to rotate.
When rotor magnetic South pole is attracted by stator north pole or vice vere magnetic locking will occur. Hence rotor will run in synchronous speed with R. M. F. So no slip will be there. It will be used in applications where constant speed is required.
Main draw back of synchronous motor is it's not self starting. seperate self starting mechanisms required.
