consider this matrix,
M,N,N,N.....
N,M,N,N....
N,N,M,N,...
the value at i'th row, jth column is M if i=j and N otherwise.
Now A= Max(M,N) and B = MIN(M,N)
so A is taller.

If the men are arranged according to their heights then the tallest man in each row will lie in the last column of the array and the shortest among them would be the man in the first row - last column of the matrix --> i. e. A
Now if the shortest men are considered in each column then they will lie in the first row of the array and the tallest among them would be the man in the first row - last column of the matrix --> i. e. B
Hence both A & B are the same.

lets arrange this in matrix form
x1 x2 x3...................x50
x51 .......................x100
.............................
................................
x451........................x500
1 condition:x50,x100,x150....x500
among these shortest is x50->A
2 condition :x1,x2,..........x50
among these tallest is x50->B
so both are same

Answer is A...
It is a simple twisting question. As these 500 mens were
sitting in a height order, the tallest among each row would
be the last person in a row(50th men, 100th men etc). Among
them shortest is A
Similarly, shortest among each column, not row would be 1-50.
So, 50th person is the tallest person.
Both A & B are same, there is a small twist in the row n
column.

Compare both A n B with the guy at the cross section of their rows n columns. Lets name him X. X is in the same row as A and same column as B.
Now A > X because A is the tallest in the row
and B< X coz B is shortest in the column.
Thus A > X > B.

May be i did not explain it clearly on my Answer #4
Take this example.
For Example, among 500 men, 10 men are 180cm tall and rest
490 men are 150cm tall.
The ten 180 cm tall men stand along the main diagonal.Like
1st row , 1st column one 180cm tall man stand. 2nd row, 2nd
column the next 180 cm tall man stand and so on till the
10th row, 10th column.
Each row has exactly one 180cm tall man and 49 150 cm tall men.
And in each column till 10th exactly one 180 cm tall man
stands and from columns 11 till 50 all are 150 cm tall men.
Now tallest among each row, is 10 180cm tall men. And
shortest among them is 180cm tall.
The shortest among each column, is 50 150 cm tall men. And
the tallest among them is 150cm tall.
Now A = 180 and B=150
which proves A is taller than B.

Also, there must be a one-to-one mapping between digits and letters. e.g. if you substitute 3 for the letter M, no other letter can be 3 and all other M in the puzzle must be 3.
