a relay is a sensing device ,which sense the fault and give
signal to the circuit breaker.
relay are many types which is is used in different
conditions.
1- electromagnetic relay
2- thermal overload relay
3-directional & nondirectiobal relay.
4- distance relay
5-mho relay
6-trip circuit supervision relay
7- master trip relay.
in realy some types of contacts are fitted
like no and nc which is interchange when current exceed a
preset value it means when relay operated.

Relay works with with inputs of CURRENT... VOLTAGE..
BASICALLY- CURRENT OPERATED AND VOLTAGE OPERATED.
Relay has the element.
if the element sense the I or V .. which crosses the set
valve .. then it operates.

Answer / nagesh
Relay is switch which can be operated by rated power supply
at the rated current...Relay consists of NO and NC contact
which operates depending on the Coil
Ex ---NO contact will become Close when relay is activated
------NC contact will open when relay is energised

Relay is one kind of electro mechanical device with is
intended to sence the fault(the situation which is opposite
to its normal operation & as well as the function of the
relay for which it has been made)& to give command to the
circuit breaker immediately to isolate the faulty part from
the healthy portion to save the entire system.
