Answer / m.p nepal
From Rankine's Formula,
Depth = p/w (1-sin$/1+sin$)2 (square was missing in #5 answer)
Where,
p=Safe permissible pressure on base
w=unit wt of soil
$ = angle of repose of soil

depth of foundation depends upon the bearing capacity of
soil and amount of load come from the structure.

BASICALLY DEPTH OF FOUNDATION IS ALWAYS DECIDED BY TYPE OF
FOUNDATION.IF IT IS SIMPLE SPREAD FOUNDATION THE DEPTH IS
0.9-1.0 AS PER THUMB RULE,IN CASE OF PILE FOUNDATION IF
FRICTION PILES ARE PROVIDED 2 MT DEPTH IS SUFFICENT WHILE
IF LOAD BEARING PILES ARE PROVIDED U HAVE TO GO DEEP UNTIL
A LOAD BEARING HARD STRAUTA IS NOT OBTAINED USUALLY IN
RIVERS.IN CASE OF RAFT FOUNDATION ,I THINK LOAD BEARING
AREA OF RAFT MATTERS.

the depth of foundation is generally adopted as per the IS
CODE. but as far as calculation is cosidered the depth of
foundation is findout by calulating the approximat load
coming on the column ,after this calculate the stresses for
pressure bulb .then draw a curve for significant depth.by
doing this we can find out approximate depth of foundation.

BY RANKIN'S FORMULA
D=P/W(1-SIN$/1+SIN$)SQUAR
P=MAXIMUM LOAD IN KG/Sq.METRE ON THE FOUNDATION
W=*SPECIFIC WEIGHT* OF THE SOIL BELOW FOUNDATION IN
KG/CUBIC METRE.
$=ANGLE OF REPOSE OF THE SOIL.

By Rankine,s rule
Df=P/W(1-Sin$/1+Sin$)Square
Where
P=Maximum allowable bearing capacity of soil beneath
foundation in KG/M2
w=Density of soil in KG/M3
$ =Internal friction angle of soil
Please note that Df should not be less than 1.2 measured
from natural ground level

Answer #7 is correct. Depth calculated by the formula should be not less than the depth upto which frost and water may affect the soil under fkundation. This depth depends upon soil and climatic conditions. Normally minimum depth should be not less than 750mm.

Total axial load transmitted to the footing is P. Area of the footing will be A=LxB.
Certain moments will be definitely transferred to the footing in question = M.
Z is the section modulus of footing.
P1 and P2 are the intensity of pressure taking positive sign and negative sign respectively.
There should be no tension in the footing. Taking the pressure intensity into consideration
from one edge of the footing Moment should be calculated . Then using the formula
M= Qbd2eff.
d effective to be calculated.
D= d effective + cpver.
D is the depth of the raft of the foundation.
