Answer / siheng
the question was lifted from the SAT test prep source
the choices given were
A) x^2 + 1 = 0
B) x^2 - x - 2 = 0
C) x^2 - 10x - 5 = 0
D) 2x^2 - 2 = 0
E) x^2 - 2x - 3 = 0
the roots are 5, 1
but which of the following equations, a, b, c, d or e has a
root in common with x^2 - 6x + 5
the answer is D) 2x^2 -2 = 0
this is because when factored, the equation becomes
2(x^2 - 1) = 0
and the root of the equation therefore is
x^2 - 1 = 0
x^2 = 1
x = 1 ^1/2
x = 1 (since the square root of 1 is 1), which is common
with x^2 - 6x + 5
