Answer / ashraf majid
Three Windings are required Where U require three levels of
voltage.These windings are
1.HV (High Voltage) Winding
2.IV (Intermediate voltage) Winding
3.LV (Low Voltage) Winding
The main task of voltage transformation is performed by HV
winding & IV winding, while as LV winding is used for minor
purposes as auxilliary winding
Two winding transformers are more common and used for
transformation of One voltage level into another.

Three winding transformers can also be used in the places
where you have space constraints, there ispite of giving
two no. two winnding transformers one no. three winding
transformer can be used.
A three winding transformer can be can have following
configurations:
A.Configuration-1
1.HV (High Voltage) Winding say 400 kV
2.IV (Intermediate voltage) Winding say 220 kV
3.LV (Low Voltage) Winding say 6.3 kV
B.Configuration-2
1.HV (High Voltage) Winding say 400 kV
2.LV-1 (Low Voltage) Winding say 13.8 kV
3.LV-1 (Low Voltage) Winding say 13.8 kV
With this configuration if we say that MVA capacity of
transformer is 220 MVA (say) at 400 kV, them at 13.8 kV (LV-
1 & LV-2) windings will have MVA capacity of 110 MVA each.

There is also another application of three windings
transformer with unloaded IV (Intermediate voltage) delta
winding. The function of this kind of IV delta winding is
for reducing unbalance in the supply side, when this
transformer is delivering power to an unbalance load.

Tree Winding transformers are used to supply DC Bus bars
also, and in this case rectification will be better becuase
12 pole will be used.
