Hi CMM -Capability Marturity Model this the old version now
all the IT industries are following CMMI-Capability
Marturity Model and Intergration. actuly this is also for
other industries other than IT industries. but every one
assumes CMMI is only for IT companies.
CMMI is Process but not a Model. It only tells us this is a
better way to get good result. but this CMMI does not
Implies any hard rule tht all the companies should follow
its methods/standards.
In CMMI there are 5 levels
CMMI Level 1 Initial : In this company would not have any
specific plan or procedure to carry out the
project/development of software.
CMMI Level 2 Managed : In this stage the company is
depended on one particular person eg: lets think u r
organisation has TL/Manager under his guidence the company
is running well in profits all rules, all plans are under
his control. if the person leaves the organisation with any
reason then wht is the state of company ? thtsy it is
called as Managed level CMMI does not want it organisations
under 1control.
CMMI Level 3 Defined : in this level all the set of rules
are mentioned . in detail, all plans are disussed among the
teams formations of various teams, etc when ther is aset of
aplan it should be discussed among all the teams then only
it is finilised and gets it into implemented. in level 2 we
dnt find any Individuality but in this Level 3 all should
accept it or else it cannot be implemented. thts wht CMMI
states all team members should accept proposal.
CMMI level 4 Quantatitive Managed : At maturity level 4,
the organization and projects establish quantitative
objectives for quality and process performance and use them
as criteria in managing processes. Quantitative objectives
are based on the needs of the customer, end users,
organization, and process implementers. Quality and process
performance is understood in statistical terms and is
managed throughout the life of the processes.
CMMI level 5 Optimising :focuses on continually improving
process performance through incremental and innovative
process and technological improvements. Quantitative
process improvement objectives for the organization are
established, continually revised to reflect changing
business objectives, and used as criteria in managing
process improvement. The effects of deployed process
improvements are measured and evaluated against the
quantitative process improvement objectives. Both the
defined processes and the organization’s set of standard
processes are targets of measurable improvement activities.
Generaly there is alot of work in level 3 only than other
levels.level2 and level1 no one counts . company can
directly go for level 3 assesment. without following 2 and
1 levels. but cnt go for 4 and 5 directly.
ISO : International Standards for Organisation
Generally ISO does not have any rules to be followed but it
only checks are you following as u have mentioned in
company.
In todays IT companies want sell there products/Projects in
the market or clients they look wether the company is havg
the CMMI standards or not it has became a neccessity for IT
companies.
Thank you Guys.

ISO means International organization for standardization.
Thelatest ISO 9000 series of standards of interest to s/w
development oraganizations are
ISO 9000:2000- Quality management systems - fundamentals &
vocabulory.
ISO 9001:2000- Quality management systems-Requirements
ISO 9004:2000- Quality management systems-Guidelince for
Performance Improvement.
The scope of the document defines the qualty management
system to deliver a quality product to the customer.
ISO 9000- IS applicable to variety of organizations like
hotels,hospitals,h/w development
organizations,manufacturing units & also s/w development
organizations.
TO MY KNOWLEDGE ,I HAVE GIVEN THE IDEA OF ISO
STANDARDS.

· SEI = ‘Software Engineering Institute’ at Carnegie-Mellon University; initiated by the U.S. Defense Department to help improve software development processes.
· CMM = ‘Capability Maturity Model’, developed by the SEI. It’s a model of 5 levels of organizational ‘maturity’ that determine effectiveness in delivering quality software. It is geared to large organizations such as large U.S. Defense Department contractors. However, many of the QA processes involved are appropriate to any organization, and if reasonably applied can be helpful. Organizations can receive CMM ratings by undergoing assessments by qualified auditors.
Level 1 - characterized by chaos, periodic panics, and heroic efforts required by individuals to successfully complete projects. Few if any processes in place; successes may not be repeatable.
Level 2 – software project tracking, requirements management, realistic planning, and configuration management processes are in place; successful practices can be repeated.
Level 3 – standard software development and maintenance processes are integrated throughout an organization; a Software Engineering Process Group is in place to oversee software processes, and training programs are used to ensure understanding and compliance.
Level 4 – metrics are used to track productivity, processes, and products. Project performance is predictable, and quality is consistently high.
Level 5 – the focus is on continuous process improvement. The impact of new processes and technologies can be predicted and effectively implemented when required.
· ISO = ‘International Organization for Standards’ – The ISO 9001, 9002, and 9003 standards concern quality systems that are assessed by outside auditors, and they apply to many kinds of production and manufacturing organizations, not just software. The most comprehensive is 9001, and this is the one most often used by software development organizations. It covers documentation, design, development, production, testing, installation, servicing, and other processes. ISO 9000-3 (not the same as 9003) is a guideline for applying ISO 9001 to software development organizations. The U.S. version of the ISO 9000 series standards is exactly the same as the international version, and is called the ANSI/ASQ Q9000 series. The U.S. version can be purchased directly from the ASQ (American Society for Quality) or the ANSI organizations. To be ISO 9001 certified, a third-party auditor assesses an organization, and certification is typically good for about 3 years, after which a complete reassessment is required. Note that ISO 9000 certification does not necessarily indicate quality products – it indicates only that documented processes are followed.
· IEEE = ‘Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ – among other things, creates standards such as ‘IEEE Standard for Software Test Documentation’ (IEEE/ANSI Standard 829), ‘IEEE Standard of Software Unit Testing (IEEE/ANSI Standard 1008), ‘IEEE Standard for Software Quality Assurance Plans’ (IEEE/ANSI Standard 730), and others.
· ANSI = ‘American National Standards Institute’, the primary industrial standards body in the U.S.; publishes some software-related standards in conjunction with the IEEE and ASQ (American Society for Quality).
