What is difference between wire and cable ?..

Answer / saqib

People usually get confused describing the functions of wires and cables and often end up naming one for the other.
Although, professionals know and understand the operational functions of wires and cables, they often give a blank expression when it comes to defining one of them.
As an attempt to put an end to this unanswered question, we at Polycab have come up with an exclusive blog post to educate people on the difference between wires and cables and its working.
Basically, wires work as a single conductor with one or few strands of copper or aluminum filaments conducting electricity. The copper or aluminum strands of wires are usually bare and often twisted. However, some wires are also enveloped in a thin, colored protective sheath. On the other hand, cables are two or more insulated conductors which often run parallel and are bonded or twisted to form a single entity.
If cables are ripped off their insulation exposing both the conductors, then it can be termed as wires.
Wires are basically categorized into two types i.e. solid and stranded depending on its functionality, resistance and flexibility.
Solid wires as the term suggests are solid-core conductors which usually comprises of a single strand of wire and are often bare and sometimes insulated.
These wires are less resistant compared to stranded wires which offer superior resistance to electricity. Solid wires are less flexible and more rigid making them an effective anti-corrosive substitute for sensitive environments.
Stranded wires are more flexible as they are a group of insulated or exposed wires which can be routed as per the requirements. Stranded wires withstand the effect of time and are costlier than solid wires. Stranded wires are usually used in controlled environments where there is a need for flexibility. Generally, stranded wires are ideal for circuit board connections and audio headphones whereas, solid wires are mostly used in magnet wiring and electric motors.
In general, stranded wire should be used in situations where a great deal of flexibility is needed and solid wires should be used when and where rigidity and strength is necessary. A stranded wire is typically used in circuit board connections, audio headphones and connection areas around moving joints. Solid copper wires are used in electric motors, coils and magnet wiring.
