why we providing 40mm cover to columns & 25mm to shear wall
Answer / nitheesh
Mainly covers are intended to protect reinforcement from corroding environment.
columns are supposed to carry vertical loads, moment at base due to DL,LL and EL(WL). Any deterioration in the longitudinal rebars definitely results in structural failure, whereas shearwalls are intended for lateral bracing purposes and not to carry any vertical loads. hence structural failure will be absent, hence thinking economically only code have provided such provisions.
