There are 3 main types of beam as Cantilever, Simply
Supported and Continuous.

Flanged beams, Rectangular beams, etc are under the said
categories.

Tie beams are to connect columns and these are normally at
mid of walls. These beams help to prevent from buckling of
columns etc.
