A unilateral tolerance is tolerance in which variation is
permitted only in one direction from the specified direction.
eg 1800 +0.000/-0.060
bilateral tolerance is tolerance in which variation is
permitted in both direction from the specified direction.
eg 1800 +0.060/-0.060

In bilateral tolrence the limit dimensions are given above and below the the nominal or basic size,and in uniletral tolrence system the limit dimensions are onlyabove or below the nominal size.

A toleranced dimension is bilaterial if the limit dimensions are given above and below the nominal size
When the two limit dimensions are only above the nominal size or only below the nominal size then the tolerance are said to be unilateral

Consider a shaft, if its ok if u give value,and -value,(any one at a time) if it works in that way, then it is the bilateral tolerance;
If only one way the shaft going to be fitting, let it be in value case, and not in -value case , then it is the unilateral case. Is it the answer?I think so!
