The selection of 4 pole or 6 pole depends on application and speed.
To explain in detail
speed, N = 120f/p
where,
N
f = frequency
p=poles
From above it was clear speed depands on frequency and no of poles.

actually this depends on the operation of the motor.in most
of the cases 6 pole motor are more beneficial since we get
close wave form of flux as compared to the sine wave.
but when explanation is needed for the motor operation then
4 pole motor is very easy to understand.
