why the earth terminal in three pin top is longer than rest
of the two terminal and of bigger size?

1. earth terminal top pin is longer because when we insert
the
plug in socket then the longer earth pin firstly contact
with socket so that in case of leakage current it found low
resistance path, and hence person is safer.
2. second thing is that the earth terminal top pin is large
in diameter so that one can not insert the earth pin into
the line terminal of socket by mistake. because the earth
terminal is conected to body of machine/equipment therefore
if any body insert earth pin of top in to line terminal of
socket then line current comes into body of
machine/equipment.

Because Current always take low resistance path, i.e
Resistance is inversely propotional to Area,
means higher the fault current, lower the resistance,
Higher the conducting area i.e Earth terminal area is higher
than normal pins
R = ql/A, Resistance increases, area decreases

As we know earth is connected to the body of
equiment/machine hence if earth terminal is longer then
earth will be connected to body of equipment/machine first
thereafter phase and neutral. It is bigger size because it
must not go in phase & neutral terminal by any mistake so
as to avoid any direct contact of body of machine with
phase/neutral.
