- Project by definition should have verifiable output
(product) to be produced with in specified time frame.
Maintenance phase of a project should be treated like a
program with clear definition of scope of maintenance
activities and can go on for fixed period say in number of
years.
- The criticality of the project depends on the nature of
the product being supported i.e., if it is a mission
critical product (say online banking or share trading
systems etc.,) the criticality would be very high else it
could be between medium to low.
- Monitoring (Monitor the completion of tasks as per SLA)
- Controling (Duration and cost over runs on each tasks or
group of tasks)
- Scope Management ( Number of support requests / critical
nature requests allowed for the program duration )

Any project is unique and one of its kind. Hence,
criticality would be at par with any other project.
Business weightage might change for a project in an
organisation based on various parameters like the
beneficiaries, cost, technical know-how etc.
For any project, Planning Phase is the Key. Execution
phase will be successful upon seamless Planning and careful
Monitoring & Controlling

If the project is just started in maintenance phase or in
warranty period(a time period for which the support is
mandatory after GO-LIVE), the criticality is very high. This
is the period where most of the end-users will start using
the system. They might encounter different types of issues
which might not be an technical or functional issue, which
might be a perceived as Issue due to lact of knowledge.
These knowledge gaps must be addressed very quickly to
avoid further escalations and misconceptions about the
system. The Admin team and infrastructure team should be
extra cautious and should regularly check the statuses of
the different systems for their availability.

Criticality is high, customer has to be satisfied in all
aspects of product. However being a overhead for project
management it has to be bind with SLA to have clear
resource utilization picture. Maintenance is important area
and can not be undermine - for organization to understand
the weak product areas, customer [sitting on contract
renewal) etc. Maintenance should not take new module
enhacement or new functionality development, this team not
meant for this.
More focus should be in analysis/ code phases with clsear
focus as below,
1. Analysis:- It should be impact analysis no new
functionality understanding etc.
2. Code: Mantra should be as less code lines change to fix
the defect
