Two planes take off at the same exact moment. They are
flying across the Atlantic. One leaves New York and is
flying to Paris at 500 miles per hour. The other leaves
Paris and is flying to New York at only 450 miles per hour (
because of a strong head wind ).
Which one will be closer to Paris when they meet?

This is a math problem, not a airline operator problem. If two planes meet, it means they are at the same place. It isn't relevant to question whether they crash or not, or whether the cockpits meet or the entire plane. If one plane is Point A and the other is Point B, and they both have coordinates, we can say that when Point A and Point B meet, they have the same coordinates. Let's say that they meet at the coordinates x = 5. So the coordinates of A are 5 and the coordinates of B are also 5. 5-5 = 0. The distance between A and B is ZERO, when they meet. Therefore, they will be at the same place when they meet, and neither will be closer to Paris. Stupid question.

I still can't understand the reasoning behind the "they will be the same distance from Paris" argument.
When both objects meet, in my opinion is when a point on either plane arrive at the same distance from the target, this only means the cockpits are the same distance from Paris, when you take into account the full length of the plane the tail will obviously be closer to Paris on the flight heading to New York.

I understand what you're thinking, but the question is not asking "which plane is closer to its starting location", it's asking which is closer to Paris. Think about it, it's basically an intersection point between two lines, so one single point (where the planes meet) cannot be multiple distances away from another single point (Paris).

I don't think anyone has explained this well, so here goes
my attempt. The planes will be in the same spot because
when they meet, they are effectively at the same point in
space. Naturally, one point cannot be two separate
distances from another, so they are equal.

Ohhhh my God, people calm down. It's not a math problem, an aviation problem, or anything like that. It's a RIDDLE.
Haha, people are stressing way too much about this.
(And by the way, yes, they're the same distance from Paris since they're in the same exact place.)

They tried to trick people by making them think oh the one
leaving Paris on route to NY is closer because it left Paris
or leaving NY on route to Paris is closer because its
traveling faster but the answer is that they are the same
distance from Paris because when they meet they are in the
same location in reference to Paris.

It's just a riddle.... When they meet or pass each other,
they will both be the same distance away from Paris for
that split-second. Who ever didn't get it, get over it, you
were wrong :)

Lets say they are at the same aptitude, the plane flying
from paris will be closer to paris as the planes noses meet
their tails will be closer to there departure airport.
Unless when the question is infering that the word "meet"
is directly proportional with one another, in that case
they would both be the same distance

A man is going to an Antique Car auction. All purchases must be paid for in cash. He goes to the bank and draws out $25,000. Since the man does not want to be seen carrying that much money, he places it in 15 evelopes numbered 1 through 15. Each envelope contains the least number of bills possible of any available US currency (i.e. no two tens in place of a twenty). At the auction he makes a successful bid of $8322 for a car. He hands the auctioneer envelopes number(s) 2, 8, and 14. After opening the envelopes the auctioneer finds exactly the right amount. How many ones did the auctioneer find in the envelopes?
